7/6/2023 0 Comments Piranesi discussion questionsI am not usually a reader of fantasy, but all the reviews I saw of this book raved about the incredible world-building, so I decided to give it a shot. When I heard it mentioned on a pop culture podcast, I was even more intrigued by it. This has been one of those books that are constantly being requested at work. The use of the journals as a narrative tool was well done and helped with the immersive quality of the book. Clarke is able to transport readers into an entirely different world, and we just want more of it. I think that’s an amazing thing for a writer to be able to elicit from a reader. I was rooting for him at ever step and often had the urge to step in and protect him when I thought he was being taken advantage of. Clarke skillfully showed us his personality with him having hardly any interactions with other people. Speaking of, Piranesi was such a sympathetic character and I was quickly drawn to him. I enjoyed the epistolary writing style as it gave us quick insight into our main character. Clarke did an amazing job of setting the scene of Piranesi’s world and I felt I was right there with him. I did struggle a little at first because the first few chapters are mostly just Piranesi describing various halls and rooms, but after that initial hump, I was totally in. I was very pleasantly surprised with this book! I am not usually a reader of fantasy as I find it difficult to fully immerse myself in new worlds. Suddenly, Piranesi’s existence is not so simple, and he slowly discovers the truth about his world and his relationship to the world beyond his walls. Piranesi lives there alone and has come up with numerous ways of surviving and he believes that this is the entire world and that nothing else exists outside of the House and that no other people exist except him and a man he calls the Other and also 13 other people who are actually the skeletons of people he’s never met. No longer able to trust his memory and his own record-keeping, he makes contact with another possible inhabitant of his world. Then, Piranesi starts to notice some strange statements from the “Other” as well as unfamiliar entries in his journals. Piranesi considers the “Other” a great friend, and is determined to help him on his quest to find “A Great and Secret Knowledge.” They meet occasionally, and the “Other” sometimes brings Piranesi gifts. Piranesi believes he and the “Other” are the only living inhabitants of their world. His is a simple existence but one he seems utterly happy with. He enjoys exploring his world and documenting his life and experiences in his journals. Piranesi lives in a world made up of halls and vestibules, and great big statues.
